The Ball State Philosophy and Religious Studies Department in partnership with Muncie Public Library presents the Big Questions, Big Ideas series. Learn to think critically about complex issues and questions, and cultivate an awareness of the diversity of ideas in our world.

October's speaker will be Dr. Sarah Vitale, Associate Professor of Philosophy speaking about “The Community of Philosophical Inquiry”:

Philosophy with Children is a worldwide movement to engage young people in philosophical dialogue. One method used by Philosophy with Children practitioners is the “Community of Philosophical Inquiry” or CPI. Originally designed by Matthew Lipman and Ann Margaret Sharp a Community of Philosophical Inquiry (CPI) aims to be a space wherein all members are coequal knowledge creators. A CPI begins with a prompt, which leads to questions and discussion, which is facilitated to bring out philosophical themes and connections. The method can be used by other communities seeking to work toward greater understandings of issues affecting their members. In this presentation, Dr. Vitale will engage participants in a CPI, followed by reflection on the process, so they can consider how this method might serve them in various settings.
